Working with Toddlers

Photographing toddlers can be both rewarding and challenging. Toddlers are full of energy, curiosity, and unpredictable behavior, which can make sessions very dymanic. Here are some tips and tricks I have for capturing the perfect shots during your photo session:

Be patient and flexible

Toddlers have a short attention span and may not be willing to sit still for very long. Be patient and flexible, and be prepared to take breaks if necessary. Allow toddlers to explore their surroundings and capture candid shots of their natural movements and expressions.

Use props and toys

Using props and toys can help keep toddlers engaged and focused during the photo session. Bring along items that reflect the toddler's interests and personality, such as stuffed animals or their favorite type of toy to play with. Use the props to encourage interaction and playfulness, and capture candid moments as they play.

Keep it simple

When it comes to toddler photography, simplicity is key. Avoid cluttered or distracting backgrounds, and use natural light whenever possible. Keep the focus on the toddler, and use minimal props at one time, more can be overstimulating or even distracting.

Get on their level

To capture the best shots of toddlers, it's important to get down to their level I mean this in two ways. First, when I first meet your toddler I will get on there level to say hello, show them my camera. They likely have never seen a big camera before, I show them how it all works. Secondly, it also means getting down on the ground and shooting from their perspective. This will create a more intimate and engaging perspective, and capture the toddler's unique personality and expressions.

Involve the parents

Toddlers feel more comfortable and at ease when their parents are involved in the photo session. I almost always start with your toddler in the arms of one of the parents. It's so normal for them to feel a little shy. This is a great way to capture your bond, and all the cuddles.
I also encourage parents to interact with their child, and capture candid shots of their interactions. This will create a more natural and relaxed environment, and capture the special bond between parent and child.
Little games always help like peak-a-boo or pretend you’re a…. “airplane, frog, superhero”, you get the idea!

Taking photos of toddlers may seem like a big challenge, but with these tips, you can create beautiful and memorable photographs that capture their unique personalities and expressions. We just have to remember to be patient, flexible, and most importantly, have fun!
